| JLM Politics: Hitorerut party leaves coalition, Ofer Berkovitch to run against Barkat for Mayor

Monday, 13 November 9:49 PM

Hitorerut Party head and deputy Mayor Ofer Berkovitch announced today that his party will be leaving Mayor Nir Barkat's coalition, and that he will run against Barkat in the mayoral election.

Jerusalem's municipal elections are scheduled to take place in about 11 months. The rivalry between Berkovitch and Barkat has been especially tense in recent months, and reached a head when Barkat signed an agreement in July with Hareidi parties that effectively divides the city along religious lines.

Former Jerusalem city attorney Avi Salman also recently announced that he will run in the elections. City councilmen Moshe Lion and Meir Turgeman are expected to run, as will an ultra-Orthodox candidate. Barkat is expected to formally announce by the end of the year whether he'll run for a third term as mayor, or head to national politics. We've heard indications that the well-loved mayor will probably decide to stay put.
