Choosing an Internet provider? |
My roommate and I are looking to sign up for internet for our apartment and have no idea which company to go with and what size/speed we need. If you have any positive or negative experience, or suggestions regarding any of the internet companies (HOT, Bezeq, netvision, others) please share. Also, what size/speed would 2 girls who dont do anything crazy online (mostly email, websites, a little bit of streaming) need for a wireless connection?
Comment by Shira Katz, on 19-10-2009 13:39 I use Bezeq benleumi and I have never had a problem with the actual service. I started out with 1.5 (which is a lot cheaper) I found that even just for me, I was downloading a lot of things and I also use an internet phone, so I really needed the 2.5 bandwidth. Just know that the higher speed you go the more you pay to the phone company AND also to the provider. Good luck. If you find any amazingly cheap deals lemee know ;-) -Shira

Comment by Pesach Belfer, on 19-10-2009 15:28 We found Internet Rimon to be cheaper that the other providers, which was a surprise! Even if you don't feel that you need filtering, there are always sites that one might not want to be exposed to even accidentally. Worth a try, in our opinion.

Comment by Avrohom Rubin, on 19-10-2009 17:49 I havent tried them all but heres a little more useful info. Netvision and Rimon dont have stable connections. For regular surfing this makes no difference but for working overseas on a remote server i.e. Citrix, Yahoo Small Business, VOIP to VOIP conferencing this becomes a serious issue. Bezeq 014 is stable in this regard, but still VOIP to VOIP systems like networked offices use today is not enough. Mosesnet uses very stable servers, I think they are really contracting from 012, but it makes no difference. The best thing for people using business apps are business packages. Bezeq has one, I talk more 4 less has one as do others these are unbelievably stable and 1.5 is ample for most things. These run around 50 NIS (around 10 NIS more than the usual 1.5). On the other hand if you are using the net more for torrenting then a higher bandwidth is more important than a more stable steady connection. For streaming I dont know as I havent bother testing it. A side note on filters, most ISP (server) based filters are very bandwidth disrupting even though people usually get server based filters to combat this problem in the first place. A client based filter like Blue Coat K9 is more stable. But for those looking for server based filtering in spite of its drawbacks, Bezeq also has many filtering options, not just Rimon. You can many times get it included with the regular package, or a few NIS more, at that point Bezeq also becomes unstable though, in my experience so far. Avrohom Rubin abie@rubinitconsulting.com

Comment by yuda_a1answer.com, on 30-10-2009 03:04 Thats a good question which is also a bit complicated to answer exactly because it also depends on where you are and how the infrastructure is. So its like this there are 3 major Internet Service Providers: Bezeqint, 012, Netvision I happen to have worked with all the providers from when they have started selling ADSL in israel. Each one has its plusses and minuses although i will tell you what i did I started out with netvision where i got a decent price but stuck with really bad bad quality that websites took forever to load and i had response times of over 250ms where a normal site on an american server should take 160-190ms when i tried to disconnect with them it took forever because i had to run after them all the time and even when i finally disconnected they still charged me which eventually i needed to dispute the charges and it was a huge balagan. then i had bezeqint which when i started a business i actually recommended bezeqint untill all the problems started! when they had merged with a few smaller companies they added on a huge ammount of users causing the shared lines to crash and they had huge latency to servers outside of israel and after 6 months of working with their technicians the answer i got from an executive is that they are not fixing the problem since they never commited to great quality bandwidth to outside israel but only in israel!. then we switched and now use 012 where they have fiber optic wires outside of israel, they use less hops meaning lower latency and good quality web surfing including youtube and streaming video. If you want to get even better service you can contact Italkmore4less and get from them a business quality line with static IP for a private user price although u need an american CC or any CC that can be billed in $$$ if you would like any other info you can contact me at yuda@a1answer.com

Comment by A A Z, on 03-05-2010 23:25 I have a Bezeq phone line for 25 Shekels a month and 012 2.5 speed broadband for the internet... Never had any problems (since I got it 2 years ago) - Never any connection issues etc. The speed is more than enough for what you want to do as I do the same and it's perfect. The most important thing to do is call around and get prices, and tell the next company what you were offered. They will lower and lower the prices as they hate to see you go with another company! I just called recently to say I'd heard of someone I work with who has a better deal. They took of literally 1/3 of my monthly bill off what I normally pay!

Comment by shira stein, on 16-05-2010 19:29 Netvision- I had horrible experience. First, I called them and told them I was interested if they were able to give me internet connection. They said, sure no problem and I give them my info. 2 days after they said were setting it up, they said sorry- there is no more available internet lines in your area. So I said fine- then I am canceling. They said fine and to make a long story short are still attempting to bill me now for the service I never received. Bezek Bein Leuimi- Decent. There shtick is also constantly forcing you into longer obligations (hitchayvut). In the begining, I got for a year at the fastest they could provide me with. Then 2 months later, they called me, there is more kiltah in your area do you want to upgrade. I said yes, then they started my year over. I moved a few months later, and it re started again. Basically, I feel like it will be really hard to ever get off of their contracts. Hot- so far , so good as far as honesty and customer service. The only annoying thing is that my line has randomly been turned off a few times for a few hours since I started with them.
