Condensation on Windows

Compiled by Tova with the help of fellow Jangloers.

Dear Friends at Janglo, Last week I posted re:condensation around new windows. Thank you to all who took the time to offer suggestions and advice. Many of you asked that I share the responses that I received (which were numerous). Here is a summary:

#1. Leave windows open. Overwhelmingly, this was the majority answer. I did speak to a kind (and knowledgeable) building engineer who did clarify the problem. Aluminum window frames get very cold (when it is very cold outside). When the heat is on and especially if the windows have a GOOD SEAL, condensation will form( the better the seal, the more condensation). It seems the first winter in a new home with aluminum windows (especially if they are double-glazed like mine) will be the worse. The engineer did say as the seals get looser and time goes on, the problem will improved. Our windows open from the top and the side and have a handle that can be put in various positions. Instead of leaving the windows open (and cooling off the apartment), I put the handles in a position that leaves part of the window un-sealed (or not as well-sealed). I am happy to say, now I have almost no condenation. It seems that windows like mine should come with a better explanation and perhaps a handle position that is especially for the window when condensation is a problem. Some other suggestions:

#2.Get an extractor fan (one person made this suggestion).

#3.Put silicon on the walls (it was a suggestion).

#4.Keep the tressim closed at night (I tried this--it does help).

Again thank you and let's hope that this should be the biggest problem we have. Todah Rabah, Tova (Jerusalem)
