Here is a summary of the e-mails I got about getting rid of pigeons. Thanks to all those that took time to reply.
1. Most people said that you should try and get rid of them, as they will just keep coming back each time and also because of the noise and the dirt.
2." make a scarecrow. I don't know if you have space near the windowsill, but I did it on my porch and it helped. Also they are afraid of birds of prey you can buy a stuufed owl or hawk and put it up there near the sill and I hope that it will help. Also there is something that you can buy in hardware stores (I think)it is a thing you put down that has triangles on the end sticking up which would make it hard for the birds to stand on"
3."The JSPCA has a volunteer who helps out with birds and knows a lot about them. Hopefully she can give you a humane solution. Her name (not surpsingly) is Yona. I don't have her phone number on her, however I suggest that you call another volunteer named Shoshi and ask her for Yona's number." So, I called Shoshi to ask for Yona's number and Shoshi told me it didn't have anything to do with Yona and could she help? So I told Shoshi the problem, and guess what, she wasn't any help. (but thanks for the suggestion anyway!!)
4 "try buying a spray called "oofy mi po". You spray is on the surface (not when they are on it!!) It is sticky and they usually come back once and then realize it is not a good idea. Since it's sticky you may find yourself with some feathers stuck to it. It does the trick for about a year." This is a good idea and suggested by many - and I have seen the stuff in a few hardware shops.
5."Contact the Jerusalem Bird Observatory, the experts there will advise you [email protected] or phone Alen who is very nice and very knowledgeable on 053 983024." I called Alen, and she was very nice, giving lots of useful advice and what her thoughts were on the whole business. She gave suggestions that weren't featured here, such as tying plastic bags to the offending surfaces (The pigeons can't land on them), putting dog hair on the surface (they dont like that either) or placing toy snakes on the (but they tend to cotton on sooner or later).
6."There is a pet store on Rehov Yehezkiel (the only one there) that deals with pigeons. They might know or take them to incubate." This suggestion I didn't follow up, but is just as valid as the rest.
7. "I found that hanging bits of aluminium foil to a line across my balcony keeps pigeons away (so far so good!)"
8. "a neighbour has put down a number of containers of tough cactii, and claims a considerable reduction in the number of "visitors". "
So there we are. Hope it helps.
