| Protest Friday at Lifta Spring Against Religious Coercion of Bathers

According to Kol Hair, Visitors to the Lifta springs below the entrance to Jerusalem are complaining that religious men frequently take over the public bath area on Fridays in order to immerse before shabbat. They say women are being ordered to dress more modestly by groups of yeshiva kids, or forced to leave.

In response, Jerusalem-based feminist activist Eliana Barbel is asking for mixed groups to congregate at Lifta between 12PM and 4PM Fridays to fight the phenomenon from getting stronger. Her event page on Facebook shows hundreds of people planning to come out and support her. "We invite you and you to get to the spring on Friday afternoon, to bathe in it, and to say with your feet that no extremist is allowed to exclude women from the public space," Barbel said.
