| Breads of the Beit HaMikdash Baking Workshop - Family Summer Activity

Wednesday, 11 July 8:31 PM
Looking for a really unique activity to do with your family during the 3 weeks/9days and the rest of the summer?

For the first time in two thousand years you have a unique opportunity to take part in a LIVE reconstruction of how they baked breads in the Beit Hamikdash.

Our educational and highly entertaining, 3-hour, Breads of the Beit Hamikdash workshop is based on collaborative research between the Saidel Artisan Baking Institute, Bar Ilan University and Machon
Hamikdash in an attempt to decipher the original processes used over two thousand years ago and practically reproduce them.

It is a totally hands-on workshop in which you will be baking the breads yourselves - the Two Loaves offering (shtei halechem) that was brought on Shavuot,  Korban Toda, the thanksgiving offering
with its large variety and quantity of breads. You will bake these breads in and on different types of pans (marcheshet/machvat), in an authentic brick oven, boil breads in water, fry them in oil and
more.

Next is the legendary Showbread (lechem hapanim). Of all the breads, this is the most complicated, requiring incredible skill and is for the most part shrouded in mystery. The Saidel Artisan Baking
Institute is intensely researching the Lechem Hapanim and experimenting with the practical baking aspect, trying to accurately reproduce this incredible bread, using authentic ingredients identical to
those used two thousand years ago. You know the story of Beit Garmo, the family of bakers in the time of the 2nd Beit Hamikdash who were in charge of baking the Lechem Hapanim, who would not
reveal their secret? We are trying step by step to uncover that secret - how to bake the intricately shaped breads, how to prevent them from breaking when handled, how to keep them fresh for up
to 11 days from baking, prevent them going moldy and more.

At the end, the climax of the workshop, you will all dress up as Kohanim in priestly robes for a guided tour of the Heichal, including a life-size model of the Shulchan Lechem Hapanim fully laden with
the real breads and the frankincense (levonah) - you will smell real levonah burning. It is a multi-sensory experience you will remember and cherish as long as you live.

If you are looking for an indoor (air conditioned) activity this summer for the entire family that combines authentic Jewish values with hands-on baking in a multi-sensory extravaganza of sight, sound,
taste and smell this is it! Adults will find it incredibly educational, enlightening and inspiring.

Kids (and adults) will have tons of of fun actually baking the breads and of course you will all leave with a huge bag full of amazing, interesting, tasty and holy breads.
