Updating your programs is an important step in keeping your computer safe.

🆙 + 📅

Software publishers often issue updates in order to plug up security holes (which can make your computer vulnerable to malware) and update features.

Clients often ask me about update notices: "How do we know if an update notice is legitimate?" My answer:  "If it's a program that you know and recognize and if you have an up-to-date antivirus program running, it's probably a good idea to install the update."  Antivirus programs typically scan files as they are downloaded to your computer to make sure that they are safe.

But to update ALL of your programs (even the ones without update notices), I recommend using an updater program. I've tried several different free programs.  My current recommendation:  SUMo (Software Update Monitor O!).

It received a coveted Editors' Choice award on one of my favorite sites.

A few notes:
  • The program is the most thorough one I've found.  It listed many more programs in need of updates than other updater programs I tried.
  • The updates are sorted into categories.  The "major" updates will show up first. Try updating them right away.
  • Beware of "false positives."  SUMo may list a program that needs to be updated, but when you try to update it you get a message that it is already up-to-date.  This is annoying --- but not a serious problem.
  • Updating programs is a great opportunity to check out which programs you need and use, and which ones can be uninstalled (instead of being updated). I use Revo Uninstaller  to do a thorough removal of a program and all its traces.
  • While SUMo is free, it constantly steers you to the "Pro" version which costs. Stay with the free SUMo version (sumo_lite.exe).
  • You have to update your programs one-by-one.  I tried updating a few programs at once, but didn't succeed.
  • On the update website page, I suggest using Major Geeks to perform the update.
  • Sometimes, the best procedure is to open the out-of-date program and use the program's own update option, usually found under the Help menu.

Please note:  Unfortunately, I cannot take any responsibility for use of the software, directions or links suggested. I have no interest - financial or otherwise - in the software or sites listed.  Use at your own risk
