CompuTip - A Hole in your Office? R-338

Clients have asked me

 ❔

whether they should get MS 365, which is being recommended on their computers by Microsoft --  along with a warning that their current version of Office will reach its end-of-life shortly.

I checked it out.  Microsoft Office 2016 will reach its end-of-life date on October 13, 2020.  After that date, the program will continue to work but Microsoft will no longer support it.

This means that no new updates will be issued.  Updates fix problems (aka "bugs") and patch vulnerabilities that are discovered continuously. "Vulnerabilities" are security "holes" used by hackers to access your computer and install malware or viruses. Over time, your version of Office will become increasingly out-of-date and vulnerable to hackers.

If you've decided to update, the major decision is between MS 365 (previously known as Office 365) and Microsoft Office 2019.  While Office 2019 is a traditional software package, MS 365 is a subscription service.

The big difference between the two programs is the price and payment schedule:  MS 365 requires a monthly payment.   It has no end-of-life but is updated monthly.  Office 2019 requires a one-time payment and is scheduled to reach its end-of-life on October 10, 2023.

Here ia  a good explanation of the differences between the two programs:

Office 365 is the best option for anyone who needs access to the full range of apps and perks on multiple devices.  And, you can share an account with up to six people.  Also, it's the only option that offers continuity of updates and upgrades with a low cost of ownership. However, there are monthly or yearly costs, and over time, you may end up paying for features that you'll never use.  $70 at Microsoft

If you only need the basic features on a single PC, Office 2019 is probably all you need, as it allows you to access the must-have apps, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, with all the necessary functionalities. However, paying upfront can be pricey, you have to pay again for upgrades, and you don't get extra perks.  $150 at Microsoft

Thanks to the wonders of globalization, I can get genuine Microsoft Office programs from Eastern Europe.  Prices as of June 1, 2020 include:

Office 2019 Home and Student for 110 NIS.
MS 365 for 110 NIS per year.

These prices include a Microsoft product key number and a download link for downloading the programs.  The prices DO NOT INCLUDE help downloading or installing the programs.  I charge my usual hourly rate for any help needed.
Note:  If you have a family member in the educational system, you are probably eligible for Office for free. See my post "CompuTip - Microsoft Office for FREE J-326."
