| CompuTip - Does Your Clock Make You Cuckoo? T-014

Do you have too many icons next to your digital clock (usually at the bottom right of your screen)?

Is your antivirus program one of the “hidden icons” next to your digital clock?  If your antivirus is not functioning properly (Avast shows up with a red dot), you won't even see it.

Take charge with these instructions.

Windows 10

Right click on a blank area next to the digital clock. This area is known as the “system tray” or the “notification area.” Click on “Taskbar Settings.” Scroll down to the Notification Area section. Click on “Select which icons appear on the taskbar.” You can then choose to show all icons on the taskbar, or go over the list and select which ones you want to always display next to the clock. Make sure to include your antivirus and backup programs.

Windows 7

Right click on a blank area next to the digital clock. This area is known as the “system tray” or the “notification area.” Click on “Properties,” “Customize notification icon.” Make sure that “Always show all icons and notifications on the task bar” is not check marked.  Next to each icon is a pull-down arrow with three options.  Select the desired option for each icon, OK

Here are the three options:

Show icons and notifications:

For all programs that you have set to run automatically and want to monitor, such as antivirus and backup programs.  Also good for the Windows Action Center and similar monitoring programs.

Hide icons and notifications:

For programs that you don’t need to see.

Only show notifications:

For programs that you need to pay attention to – only when something is going on.  I use this setting for most of my system tray icons.

Not sure which icons to hide and which to show?  Show them all:  Right click on a blank area next to the digital clock. Click on “Properties,” “Customize notification icon.” Make sure that “Always show all icons and notifications on the task bar” is check marked, OK.
