Speed up your Internet.

The faster, the better.

Use the free TCP Optimizer to optimize your Internet connection.  You need to download the program, run it as an administrator, and type in your Internet speed (see below).  You then click on the Optimize button, and restart your computer. Here is a tutorial and here is a review.

Here is a site for testing your Internet speed.  Before testing, close all other programs.  Note that the results will vary (see below) -- run the test a few times before coming to a conclusion. Also note that the upload speed is usually about 10% of the download speed.

Here are some of the factors that can influence Internet speed:

  1. The package you have with your infrastructure provider - Bezeq or Hot.  Bezeq has been upgrading infrastructure, allowing more clients to purchase "Ad 100" packages which (theoretically) reach a maximum Internet speed of 100 Mbps (megabytes per second).  But not everyone knows that this is even an option.

  2. The package you have with your ISP (Internet Service Provider) such as Bezeqint, Netvision, Smile, etc.  It has to provide the same speed as the infrastructure provider - or it will "bottleneck" your speed.

  3. Traffic jams.  At peak times, the Internet will be slower.

  4. The presence of viruses in your computer.

  5. Running programs that use the Internet will lower the speed test results.

  6. The number of users and devices that are connected to your router by cable or by WIFI.

  7. Your hardware.  Cable connections are usually faster than WIFI connections.  Here are some factors that affect WIFI connection speed:

The distance between your computer and your router

The number of devices connected to the Internet

The physical obstacles in the way of the WIFI signal (walls, metal and water are especially problematic).

For more information, call or email me for my free "Short Guide to Improving WIFI Reception."  The average Internet speed in Israel is currently a low 7.64 Mbps (megabytes per second).  The highest average Internet speed is available in Singapore -- 60 Mbps. See here for more information.
