| Tips on buying a car in Israel
Wednesday, 15 May 8:41 AM

There are many questions you may have when it comes to the used car buying process. In this article I will make the used car buying process easier for you. There are many essential facts you should consider before buying your next car so you won't regret your decision for a moment afterwards.

New or used car
Due to the heavy taxing on new cars, by purchasing a used car, you can get the best value for money. A new car depreciates quickly in the first few years and after 3 years, it is worth only about 50-60% of the original price. Cars being three times the price as the same models in the USA are largely of out reach most Israeli’s or those on a low income. Maybe because of the high purchasing costs, the most important concern is avoid repairs as much as possible. Buying a new car does not always mean the car will be trouble free. A new car may come with problems associated with poor design or manufacturing defects that may have been already repaired during the warranty coverage period if it's a used car. The same is true for all kinds of recalls and service campaigns. In recent memory, more and more car manufacturers are recalling cars. With accessories being more affordable than ever, It is no longer necessary to lured into buying a car because of the bells and whistles it comes with.

However, buying a used car is still a bit of a gamble – here in Israel, we have to be extra cautious that the car has real mileage, not being in a serious accident and was properly maintained. There may be some hidden problems like a worn out automatic transmission, or engine problems that may not have been obvious when you test-drove the car. It’s advised to take someone with you who knows the tricks used the seller.
So, next you must ask yourself: If I am to save money when buying a used car, how do I eliminate the risk of potential problems?

Taking the risk out of used the car buying process
First, be prepared. Do as much research as you can. Read reviews, consumer reports, ask colleagues and friends, compare options, gather gas consumption data on the make and model you're interested in. Examine reliability ratings. Try to read reviews of cars from the UK as many of the models you find here you may not have heard of in the USA, for example Skoda is a popular car in Israel, made by VW. If you just enter a dealership without knowing what you want, chances are, you will not get the car you need. More likely than not that you won't be happy with your purchase. Later you may find out that it's simply not what you wanted or what you can afford. Unfortunately it is all too common that we hear stories that car dealers try and sell cars that they are finding hard to sell to a native Israeli. We at ZVICARS advise our clients of the best makes and models that suit their needs and once the customer has chosen the right vehicle, we check out the car at one of our mechanics as part of the service, at no cost.

Someone I know bought a used Chevy wagon for quite a reasonable price. When he went for servicing, they discovered that the rear shock absorber was leaking. The price for the part alone was close to ₪5000! Finally, he sold it and bought a used Corolla that proved less expensive to maintain.

Another reason to take along an expert like ZVICARS when choosing your next car, is we will translate all the paperwork the car's history records. This will help you to eliminate many cars with potential problems. Vehicles that have been flooded or restored after serious accidents, those with rolled back odometers, heavily abused vehicles, those with outstanding debts, etc., can be eliminated after simply checking the history record of the vehicle at the post office. In fact, checking it’s history gives you a clearer picture of what you are buying. Don't buy based on what you've been told because it may not always be the truth. Check out the car yourself very carefully.
A word of caution, NEVER give a deposit or sign a contract before the car is inspected or the contract is translated by someone you trust. As the common adage goes “Buyer beware”

We find you the right set of wheels without reinventing them!
