| Historic Agreement to End Egged's Monopoly in Jerusalem!

The details of a historic deal ending Egged's bus monopoly in Jerusalem were signed Wednesday, providing a framework under which dozens of Egged lines will be operated by other companies.

Jerusalemites have complained for years that Egged buses are overcrowded, infrequent, and unreliable. It is hoped that introducing competition will improve the city's transportation system tremendously. The first tenders for new operators are expected to be published in 2019, with the entire plan spread out over the course of 10 years.

Mynet Jerusalem notes that the deal also calls for Egged to buy 150 new electric buses, and to commit to retiring buses after 10 years, instead of the current 15.
