Coding doesn’t have to mean sitting for hours on end in front of a black computer screen.

In our chug, children will develop coding skills and a basic understanding of beginning computer science concepts through online activities (including Scratch projects and activities, along with unplugged activities such as:

- storytelling
- dancing
- baking
- making paper airplanes
- building structures with jelly beans and toothpicks

As a final project, the children will become the directors and producers of their own animations and video games, and then program Dash and Dot robots to act out corresponding stories.

Every week, a computer scientist from the past or present will be introduced and discussed as a way to inspiring the children to create their own programming goals.

Parents will be able to follow along through our class blog, which includes all links and a password protected photo album.

By the end of the chug, each child will know how they want to use code to make an impact on the world!

About Melissa

While teaching Kindergarten and first grade for several years and observing the way in which children interacted with and learned from computers, Melissa developed a strong interest in educational technology.

After receiving her master’s degree in Instructional Technology and Media from Columbia Teachers College, Melissa worked as an educational consultant / teacher trainer, robotics and Scratch teacher, and as the technology teacher at a private school in Brooklyn (grades Kindergarten – eighth).

She can’t decide which part of her career she loves best – watching children develop a passion for reading, or seeing the look on children’s faces when they discover that a line of code they’ve written makes things happen.
