Safe Water Urns

Compiled by Haia with the help of fellow Jangloers.

As may people requested: here are comments that I received. thanks for all the responses. Pesach Kasher v'Sameach, Haia

1. We have had a Hemilton for many years with no problem. It's the white insulated kind. I highly suggest you stay away from the metal ones. My little cousin was killed from burns from one of them. When it tips over the top just flies off and water goes everywhere. Also, people can get burned from the outside.

2. get the one with the variable thermostat

3. We are very happy with our air pot. It holds almost five liters of water and we have never had a problem with it. it heats the water very fast, and it includes a Shabbos switch.

4. I don't know many details since my Shabbat urn was a gift, but I know that it was purchased from a small shop on Emek Refaim (across the street from the post office). It even has a shabbat mode. We are very happy with it and my friend commented that it was far less expensive than others she had seen.

5. As far as danger goes, plasticis unhealthy when heated, and to be avoided, or so I thought?????

6. We have the kind of urn that is plastic on the outside, with a stainless steel interior. In the States, we had the same kind - had it for years and never had a problem with it. Here, it's also been fine. My only issue with it is that it only holds about 22 cups of water, and if you have a lot of guests, especially if you host both Shabbat meals, it really isn't enough. So I've thought of getting a stainless one with a larger capacity, but have never gotten around to doing it. It used to be said that the plastic urns kept the water at a hotter termperature, but a friend of mine with a stainless urn says the water is plenty hot. The most important issue is that the urn be placed so that children cannot pull it over, either from a dangling cord or b/c it's too close to the edge of the counter.

7. We are very happy with our Shabbat urn, whichis a Breville, Model URN6. It is stainless steel. After Shabbat I cleanthe insidewith vinegar, and the urn is like new every week. We have had it for several years now. Once we needed a repair, but I got the part in the Shuk, and my husband was able to install it. It has the teken. I recommend it very highly.
