Cleaning Shower Curtains

Compiled by Jeff Finger with the help of fellow Jangloers.

Here are the answers I got on cleaning my shower curtain. They fell into categories:

1. AskJeeves
2. Washing machine, with or without vinegar or bleach
3. Vinegar and bleach separately applied
4. Forget it; you can't do it
5. Toilet Bowl Cleaner
6. Soak/Wipe with Vinegar
7. Soak/Wipe Bleach
8. Buy an inner liner

Most suggested using a washing machine. I have thanked everyone individually, but to all, thanks for the wonderful response. I am including them all because there were so many twists on each one.

Try www.askjeeves.com it works great for household type questions

Buy a new one. It's pointless to try to clean it.

From an old experienced "dsperate" housewife. You could pay someone 40 shekels an hour to clean it or throw it out an d buy a new one for 30 shekels. It took me a long time to get smart. Get a beautiful shower curtain you like that stays out of the tub, and a clear orplain inner one to stay in the tub. The liners cost about 3 dollars in US.

Hi! The best thing in the world: toilet bowl cleaner on a scotch pad. No scrubbing, just a flat "pass-over". It eats the scum away. Good luck!

You can try the following - first wipe it down with a damp cloth to remove as much of the "gunk" as possible. then put it in the washing machine with a cup of vinegar (instead of soap) and run it through the gentle cycle - hang to dry.

Have you tried washing it in the washing machine? Or you could clean it with bleach which removes the mildew, nicely.

Soak it in a bleach water combo.

Try simply washing it in the machine. Use a bit of bleach in with the detergent, and it should work. (It does for us)

Just pop it into the washing machine with a little bleach If the lime seposits dont come out, then put a little vinegar on them.

stick it in the washing machine on cold cycle with chlorine bleach it will be liek new- don't use a spin cycle! good luck

Put it in the washing machine at a low temp it works fine

You could try Sano anti-mildew spray. I just put my plastic shower curtain in my washer and it came out fine except that the decorations faded a bit here and there. Good luck!

I put mine in the washing machine on a delicate cycle and it comes out like new

You can put it in the washing machine on the gentle cycle. Use cold water and a bit of detergent. Then, just hang it back around your shower to dry. Actually, because of the mildew I think it's probably healthier to throw it away and start with a new one- and then make sure that you put that one in the washing machine once a month!

toss it in the washing machine, believe it or not. works like a charm.

i throw mine in the washing machine and it comes out better than new!

I was once told to soak it in bleach (diluted by water) in a bucket
night. Did the trick I think.

White vinegar will clean off the calcium deposits and bleach will clean off the mold. If the curtain is of good quality you can put it in the washing machine, otherwise soak it in the bath. If you don't
have a bath you can scrub it one section at a time in the shower. Wear gloves and old clothes and keep the windows open. Don't mix the bleach and vinegar together. Clean the curtain in two seperate processes.

Dip sponge in bleach and rub on curtain. Works every time. Fungus loses grip on plastic.

soak it in Clorax over night

Shpritz it with Cilit and sponge wash it in the shower. Then put it in the washing machine on a short 30 degree wash.

I've thrown mine in the washing machine with some bleach and omitted the last spin cycle I think (to prevent too much wrinkling- it leaves water in the machine but next time you throw in a load of laundry it'll go down with the rest of the water) and then hung the shower curtain back up to dry. My cleaning lady told me that one, and my curtain is two years old and still looks pretty good...

Wash it in the washing machine with detergent and a bit of ekonomica.

Try washing it in the machine with hot water and with a towel and put in some bleach.

bleach (ekonomika) cleans mildew, and vineger dissovles the lime-type deposits.

Start by throwing it in the washing machine - that usually removes most of the icky stuff - then try bleach.

I just wash mine in the washing machine! comes out perfect (cold water).

I often wash my plastic shower curtains in the washing machine, with regular washing powder, but with the temperature set for as low as possible. By the way when I re-hang them, I have the folded edge on the bottom facing outwards when it was facing in, it was a convenient gathering place for soap, minerals etc.

I just put mine in the washing machine with a few other items, like underwear or hand towels. When it comes out of the washing machine, it looks dreadful, but not to worry. Hang it back up wet, and gently straighten it a bit, and it hangs out quite nicely.

I put my shower curtain in the washing machine with towels. (remember to take out the hooks that hold the curtain on the rod) The towels help cushion the shower curtain. The machine, with the curtain and towels should be full but NOT stuffed. Add the soap and run the washing cycle as you would normally. To dry the curtain, just hang it up on the shower rod.

Ordinary vinegar--soak in water with a cup or two of vinegar, and you'll see they both come out.

I have used Anti Kalck by Sano and Clorox Clean-up, both are spray containers. I would suggest using a surgical mask to help prevent inhaling the fumes. Also have a window open, if there is one.

The Anti Kalck, I used this past time and it worked beautifully. I left it on for a few minutes then showered it off.

Try soaking it in water with bleach added.

Try washing it in washing machine together with towels and with bleach. Obviously, the towels should be such that they don't become damaged by the bleach. Bleach is a mildewcide. It just might work on the mineral stains as well.

Try vinegar and water - I think 1/3 vinegar to 2/3 water. And then wash down with soap and water. Oh and use rubber gloves and a brush.

I wash my shower curtains in the washing machine with spin, they emerge perfectly clean and ready to hang up. (Water temperature about 40 degrees C

Throw it in the washing machine with a couple of towels and add the soap. That'll do it.

Try washing it in your washing machine with regular detergent.

Shower curtains can be washed in a washing machine one a gentle cycle, use your regular laundry detergent and put a good size towel in with it. Sometimes it takes two washings if it is really bad. Hang it up to dry immediately.

putit in the washing machine with a few towels (leave lots of room for free floating). Add bleach to the wash cycle. Add clear cynthetic vinegar to the rinse cycle. rinse twice.

For the mildew use bleach ( economica) for the mineral stains soak in synthetic vinegar.

My vinegar book says 150ml lavender vinegar added to the water when washing and repeat when rinsing. I wouldn't bother with makeing up lavender vinegar. What I would do is lay the curtain in the bath and cover with cold water. Add about half a bottle of the cheapest vinegar you can buy, toss in some lavender if you feel so inclined and await results. It should clear the mildew. For the deposits repeat with hot water and sprinkle in a packet of drinking (cooking) soda. It will all froth up. Leave to soak.

place it in your washing machine. fill the machine w cold water and add lots of bleach. let it soak overnite and then run the machine on a gentle cycle.this will work for the mildew but for the mineral deposits u may have to repeat the process w vinegar instead of bleach. good luck!

I put mine in the ordinary washing machine wash. Comes up a treat every time.

Some bleach and a rag. If you have something to spray the bleach that is the best. Spray it on, leave it a few minutes and then it wipes right off.

bleach should deal with both the mildew and scale

soak it in the bathtub with bleach and hot water solution, then wipe it down and rinse, it should come clean. you can also throw it in the wash, it should come clean as well.If you can lie it flat, go over it first with a strong bleach solution (whatever passes for Clorox in Israel- -maybe "Economica"). apply it with a soft brush to get rid of the black bold stains and then use "Cillit" directly on the mineral deposit stains, or if you want, mix up some of what they sell to clean the water kum-kum, (needs to be sort of hot to work) and work that onto the mineral stains. If you can't lie it flat, you should fold it to as large a rectangle as you have room for and go over it section by section.
