Preventing Mosquito Bites

Compiled by Eitan Meyer with the help of fellow Jangloers.

I asked the list for advice on how to prevent mosquito bites, since my son has been having an allergic reaction to the bites he's gotten. I received over 50 responses and many telephone calls -- thanks to all those who offered advice. In the meanwhile, naturally, the mosquitos just stopped biting on their own... :-) Several people also said that immigrants' initial extreme reaction will moderate on its own. Many people asked for the responses, so here is my digest of the collected wisdom of this community. I can vouch for nothing here and have tried nothing so far:

1) Topical bite preventers:
a) "Sano-Dy," (the roll-on is best)
b) "Al-toosh"
c) fresh lemon juice on the skin
d) DEET (some objected to this), such as Autan
e) perfumes such as Avon's Boni-Bell (spelling?)
f) a combination of two organic products made by Sunrider, an American company -- SunSmileR Fruit & Vegetable Rinse and SunBrightR Laundry SuperCleanT
g) Essential oil of eucalyptus
i) Wear clothes mosquitos can't bite through (https://bugbaffler.com/ or similiar lightweight clothing)
j) Skin So Soft by Avon

2) Internal bite preventers: Taking extra vitamin B1, some say, causes the body to release an odor which mosquitos don't like. Opinions vary widely as to the correct dosage and to whether this works at all; speak to your doctor.

3) "Room" solutions:
a) Fans disperse the CO2 around people which helps mosquitos locate them.
b) There are electrical devices which disperse into the air material from either liquid cartridges or tablets; people disagreed about whether these are safe to breathe, especially for children; some advised putting them on time clocks so that they are on only during dusk and dawn, which are the mosquito hours (this also saves on the liquid or tablets).
c) Citronella sticks, candles, or oil -- mosquitos dislike the smell and stay away.
d) Plant certain plants around the outside of the house to keep mosquitos away --
e) Leave clothes-dryer antistatic sheets around the house
f) Get window screens
g) Kila -- i.e., mosquito net for a bed
h) Los Mosquitos, at health food stores, 35sh/10ml (combination of citronella, lavender, etc.) Two drops on a tissue every night.
i) Painting the inside walls of bedrooms (or houses) with DDT

4) Topical bite soothers:
a) Fenistil Gel
b) Benzanthine-H cream
c) toothpaste
d) Dr.Fisher After So aloe vera gel
