Removing Mold from Walls

Deborah Kelter, Housepainter, "Housepainting by Design", compiled this list.

I would like to thank everyone who sent me info about removing mold Many others asked me to post the info I get so here it is

For a bathroom, use paint imported from America called Bathroom Paint by Zinnsser. You can find it in Ace, Electroslil in Talpiot, and some other stores. It is an excellent antimold paint and lasts for ever, as far as I can tell, having used it for 8 years. For mold around your front door, there might be a problem of a leak somewhere. If you're in Talpiot/Baka/Katamon, I'd be happy to come along at your convenience and have a look.

Many people wrote that I should use bleach, and keep your window open a few centimeters. it might not return (In one apartment this helped, in another it didn't)

**Empty a bottle of Window Cleaner Spray (or use an empty bottle with spray cap) Fill the bottle with a mixture of Econimica (Chloride) and Water (cold). You will know when the mixture is perfect when you feel that when you added the Chloride to the water - the water becomes soft and silk. This takes about 200ML on 1L of water.

Shake well. Spray on the mold and let it soak for at least 10 minutes. Chloride is a disinfectant it kills spores and fungus immediately. Repeat the treatment if mold returns. After 10 minutes wash of the wall with water and a cloth. No mold should be left on the wall.

Please note that this is treatment of a symptom only. Get to the source of your mold problem. Enough ventilation, low humidity and warm environment.

**You should use apple vinegar.

**Hi,
the mould must be washed off with soap and water with a little vinegar in the water. When dry paint with Fungichek (pronounced the same in Hebrew, following the Manufacturer's instructions (Tambour) and the Akrinol. These two are a two stage mildew/mould/'ovesh' killer and preventative. NOTE: it only works if you strictly follow the instructions and secondly, try ventilate the apartment as much as possible, even in cold weather. B'hatzlacha, Chaim

**As for the future, use bond-rolto form a good adhesive between the old paint and the next coat, which should be supercryl. However, make sure the last pain is not peeling. If it is, you must scrape off as much as possible.

General rule in painting: do it right the first time.

besides bleach, tambor makes a good product, just follow the steps:

1. Use a hard brush with warm water and scrub the mold off.
2. Squirt a small amount of tambor's anti-mold with warm water on the area and scrub again then wait until it tries.
3. Use their anti-fungus paint (if you want to) and put at least 2 coats on, 3-4 hours between coats.
Good luck,

**Put chlorine bleach, economica in a spray bottle and spray a few times and it will disappear. To prevent mold, make sure your bathroom is well aired and warm. Mold grows in cold damp places.
After showering make sure to open windows and ventilate with the heat from the rest of your apt. Can remove black spots with mix of 1/4 bleach and 3/4 water. Just wipe or spray on. There is also paint that is mold resistant.

**Hi,
I'm not an expert on mould, but have had mold problems. We got a spray called Combat 222 by San Marco (at a small Tambour hardware store - Home Centre etc don't have it. A bit expensive) which you spray on and the mold disappears, and it is supposed to be excellent and seal it from mold coming back - so far the mould hasn't come back, but it hasn't been so long. (But it did disappear after a spray or two). There is economica - bleach, which should clean off mold, but doesn't stop it from coming back. There is also a liquid you get in hardware stores called Poon-ga-chuck (cheap) - made by Tambour, which you dilute in water and paint over the cleaned wall, and the mold doesn't return.

**Hi,
I am Yosef Krinsky and write a column on home repair and do it yourself for the Jerusalem post. I also run the Walls R Us Housepainting company. You should be able to find all the info needed via a search of jpost.com for my old articles. Best yet is to give us a call to do the work the right way with materials that I brought from the USA which are not available else ware in Israel.

**spray it with 'ekonomeeka.' Bleach. Works first time, every time. Instant results. Fill a spray bottle with bleach and spray it on.

it happens here in Israel when there isn't much ventilation - wash the area with plain Israeli "economica" which is chlorine bleach and wash solution... I do it in my shower stall about every 2-3 weeks in the winter. I have never found any other solution

**Removing mold from your walls is very easy, you use bleach. Simply wet a rag with bleach and wipe your walls. Wait a few minutes and the mold will be gone. Make sure that your bathroom is well ventilated, the fumes from the bleach are very bad for you, especially for asthmatics.

You can either buy new paint, special paint that is made for the bathroom and therefore mold-resistant, or redo this process every time the mold comes back.

Good luck!

**There are a number a commercial chemicals on the market for removing mold from walls, however, the active ingredient is usually bleach (economic in Hebrew).

The cheapest thing to do is get a spray bottle and fill it with bleach. Spray directly onto the mold and then wipe it off with a damp sponge. If the mold has already stained your walls, leave it on for a little while before you wipe it off.

WARNING! Be careful when using bleach this way. Wear gloves, old protective clothing that you don't care about, protective goggles and a mask over your nose and mouth. It may seem harmless at first, but it is not.

To prevent the mold from returning, keep the room well ventilated when showering with hot water AND repaint with an anti-fungal paint.

The way buildings are constructed here, mold will almost always grow in bathrooms. There is no way to completely avoid it, but you can significantly reduce the build up.

**There are special paints available for high moisture areas like a bathroom but they do not stop the growth of mould and mildew. They only mean the paint should not peel or flake off. Mould and mildew is caused by water. Either in the air or spilled and allowed to stay in place. Possibly the painting sealed some cracks or vent holes that previously allowed enough air to flow past the now effected areas and prevented the build up.

Now that you have mould wash the area with plain soap and water and then rinse with a 1 - 1 1/2 cup of bleach to 1 quart of water solution. If that doesn't work you may have to by some other form of disinfectant but try the bleach first.

If you have any questions give me a call.
