I just came across an excellent article by Bob Rankin about booking airline flights.
Here are some of the tips in the article:
1.     Book your flight well in advance - at least two weeks ahead.

2.     If at all possible, you should fly on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday to get the lowest airfare.

3.     Shopping on a Tuesday will yield the best deals on airline tickets… most discounted airfare deals disappear by Thursday.

4.     Accept layovers to get the lowest airfare.

5.     Use a travel search engine:

a.      Google Flights uses a unique calendar-based approach to help you figure out which departure day would save you the most money.

b.     Kayak  lets you input your travel criteria just once, then it searches multiple ticketing agency sites for you

c.     Hipmunk makes it easy to understand the tradeoffs between various flight options.  It also sorts flights by an "Agony" factor based on a combination of price, flight duration, number of stopovers, and historical on-time performance.

d.     AirfareWatchdog lists low fares that their community of users find and verify

6.     Use  SeatGuru to find out which seats are the best seats on the plane,

7.     Use incognito or private browsing to counteract price-raising cookies which flight booking sites may plant on your computer.

8.     Use your smartphone instead of your computer.  Some studies how that this is cheaper.

Please note:  Unfortunately, I cannot take any responsibility for use of the software, directions or links suggested. I have no
interest - financial or otherwise - in the software or sites listed.  Use at your own risk.
