We are pleased to announce the next Movie Matinee at Beit Knesset Hanassi. On Tuesday, August 5, we will present the multi-award-winning, highly acclaimed film DRIVING MISS DAISY.
The movie tells the deeply moving story of a Jewish widow living in Atlanta. After she was in a car accident while she was driving, her son hires an African American chauffeur for her. The film develops the relationship between the two people over a period of decades—the unlikely closeness and warmth between a Jewish woman in her seventies and a much younger Black man.
The movie also presents the rarely-captured existence of American Southern Jewishness. Reviewer Eliza McGraw: “Driving Miss Daisy demonstrates the inseparability of Jewishness and history within a Southern context...Southernness and Southern Jewishness become interdependent, with Daisy's Jewishness the lens through which broader questions about Southern race relations are interpreted.”
The film stars Morgan Freeman, Jessica Tandy and Dan Akroyd. The movie was nominated for a remarkable NINE Academy Awards and won four including Best Picture and Best Actress for Ms. Tandy.
The Movie Matinee is at 2:00. The film is 1¾ hours in length.
There will be a brief introduction of the film and a short talk and discussion after the screening. There will be an essay about the movie provided to attendees.
There will be refreshments. No reservations are required.
Beit Knesset Hanassi is located at 24 Ussishkin Street. The admission is 20 shekels for members of the shul and 30 shekels for non-members.
If you can please bring the exact change, we would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.
