DIPLOMATIC EDITOR at Confidential media company
Full Time

DIPLOMATIC EDITOR Full-time · Initial team · Tel Aviv or remote across the region

We are building a new English-language publication covering defence, diplomacy and regional affairs from across the Mediterranean - from North Africa, to the Middle East and the Persian Gulf. The work is the opposite of breaking news. We are looking for calm, sourced reporting on what is actually being discussed, for readers who need to understand the region rather than argue about it.

We are looking for a Diplomatic Editor to lead that side of the newsroom from the start.

THE ROLE This is a senior position. You will set the diplomatic agenda, report your own stories, and shape how we cover negotiation, statecraft and the relationships that move the region. You will work alongside a small founding team of established journalists.

Part of this work is on camera and on mic: filming interviews in the field, and taking your turn in the studio to present or co-host the podcast and lead the interviews on it. It is a real part of the role, not the whole of it. You will not be on screen every day, and you need not arrive as a polished broadcaster, but you should be willing to do it and to get good at it.

WHAT YOU ALREADY HAVE A real track record reporting on foreign policy, diplomacy or international affairs, ideally in or on this region.

Relationships that already exist. People in and around foreign ministries, missions and policy circles take your call. This matters more than anything else on this list, and it is not something we can teach.

The judgment to tell a genuine story from noise, and the sourcing to know which is which.

A precise, unshowy writing voice. We are not in the hot-take business.

THIS IS NOT THE ROLE IF You are early in your career, or you would be building your contacts from scratch. We need someone who can start having the right conversations in week one.

THE OFFER Competitive pay and the chance to do the kind of diplomatic reporting most newsrooms no longer resource.

APPLYING We know most strong candidates are already happily employed. Every conversation is treated in complete confidence, and nothing happens without your go-ahead.
