You can download and view curated Digital Collections from the Library of Congress.  The collections include: books, newspapers, manuscripts, prints and photos, maps, musical scores, films, sound recordings and more that are believed to be in the public domain. 

Here are some of the topics covered:  maps and exploration, cars, travel, architecture, Japanese fine prints, Holidays, public domain films from the National Film Registry, and children’s books.

Most of the collections are USA - centered, but here are a few that are closer to home:
