We are pleased to announce the next Movie Matinee at Beit Knesset Hanassi. On Tuesday, August 18, we will present the highly acclaimed, award-winning film NORTH BY NORTHWEST.
The movie was directed by the great Alfred Hitchcock. It is considered one of his very best films. It was released in 1959 and was nominated for three Academy Awards. It won many awards and was also a popular success, finishing in the top ten box office gross receipts for the year.
The movie is about an ordinary businessman—the always-charming, charismatic and debonair Cary Grant—who is mistaken as a CIA spy by foreign operatives. They are trying to assassinate him. In addition, he is inadvertently “in the wrong place at the wrong time” when the murder of a United Nations official is committed. He is accused of that killing.
So while the foreign spies attempt to kill him, the police are trying to find him to arrest him. He escapes across the country with the international assassins and the police from numerous states on his tail. He tries to find the real American spy in order to clear his name.
With murder, kidnapping and Cold War espionage, one would expect that this movie would be heavy and violent. But as he did in so many of his marvelous movies, Hitchcock made a light and engaging film. The movie is both suspenseful and delightful as only Hitchcock could pull off. It is the perfect “summer film”.
Besides Cary Grant, North by Northwest stars the gorgeous Eva Marie Saint in a difficult-to-figure-out role in this plot. There is a supporting cast of some of Hollywood’s greatest character actors/sometimes stars including Martin Landau, James Mason and Leo G. Carroll.
The movie is in English and has English subtitles.
The Movie Matinee is at 2:00. The film is 2¼ hours in length.
There will be a brief introduction of the film and a short talk and discussion after the screening.
There will be refreshments. No reservations are required.
Beit Knesset Hanassi is located at 24 Ussishkin Street. The admission is 20 shekels for members of the shul and 30 shekels for non-members.
