The rule is that when one attains complete mastery over one’s character in that one does not give into any type of desires, and this includes prohibited speech (such as lashon hara, mockery etc.) then that in and of itself will generate real, true and everlasting happiness. Because now it is the soul that is being gratified and that makes a person happy (because the true you is a soul.)
