I echo everything written in all the previous reviews about Julie. I cannot imagine anyone better to guide a writer through the developmental editing process. Julie not only knows her stuff, but she knows how to present it in a way that puts you at ease. She comes from a place of encouragement. She doesn't rewrite it for you or tell you what to say, she asks questions, and highlights the rhythm of the read. She guides you to be your best. On a technical note: I really liked having a set schedule with time frames and deadlines. We used a project management software to track progress of our working together, and it kept me on my toes. She was great at offering writing prompts that pulled chapters out of me with relative ease. She was like Michelangelo looking at a big block of marble, and discovering David with each suggested chisel and polish. My book may be more of a "Dave" than a "David", but nonetheless Julie helped me discover far more beauty in it than I could have imagined!
Highly recommend working with Julie! I sent Julie my first manuscript for assessment and in a very short time, I received my assessment. She provided some great advice, not only about my book but about the genre and marketability of my book. I look forward to working with her on future projects as well.
I contacted Julie to do a manuscript assessment for my first ever book. I had no idea what to expect. I have felt so nurtured by Julie in this process. She's given me incredible feedback on what's working and what's not. She's super responsive to emails and enquiries, and worked very quickly to return the assessment for me. I am so excited by the feedback and her enthusiasm for my project, and ever so grateful for her willingness to answer my questions and to be incredibly honest throughout the whole process. I'm looking forward to the next step now!
We started with the fifty-thousand word memoir I had already written. Julie challenged and guided me as we reworked, revised, and re-ordered it into a polished and powerful sixty-five thousand manuscript. At our first meeting, as soon as I described my spiritual journey and how it had finally come to a happy ending, she exclaimed "That's what your book is really about!" She was spot-on, and it was a pleasure to receive her insights and suggestions, address them, and see how they made the the finished product "glow"!
Julie will deconstruct your book and work you hard to fix it. She will be your biggest fan and toughest critic all in one, pushing you constantly to think hard about your story, descriptions, themes, everything. Think your book is great? The best novel to hit the shelves in a decade? It might be, but not until you rebuild it with Julie.
No matter how good you think you are Julie will give you both a rude awakening and make you a whole lot better. Julie is your quantum leap in expertise. I live in fear and awe of her. All the same, when I read the final MS I have the sense of satisfaction and accomplishment that only my kids can give me.
As I was looking for someone to help me write my first non-fiction book, I came across Julie. I couldn't have asked for a more professional, insightful and honest mentor who really "got me." Her timely and excellent comments, in addition to her wonderful feedback provided me with so much guidance and support. Thank you Jules! Couldn't have done this without you!!
Hiring Julie to edit my book is of the best things that I could have done. Not just because of her literary sense and her gentle way of shepherding what I was convinced would never be more than an incoherent mess into an actual book, but also due to her constant and heartfelt support and encouragement along the way. Yeah, Julie excels in all the way a good literary editor must, but she also gets that writing can be emotionally taxing and even dispiriting; so amorphous a challenge that even the smallest distractions can derail work on the most promising passages. Most telling is Julie's infectious love affair with the written word. For these reasons and more, I admire and recommend my friend and mentor, Julie Gray.
As a new writer, I knew I needed guidance on how to complete my manuscript. I am so glad I found Julie. She held my hand though the entire process, giving me constructive feedback and brilliant suggestions along the way. Writing a booK is a challenge, an editor is a must! I'm so glad I pick Julie!
Julie is the first editor that I have worked with who has given me practical input and finally a clear path of how to channel my writings to the right destination. Her feedback and support has given me motivation and practical steps of how to continue further. It has been more than practical ,it's been illuminating. Thanks Julie Look forward to working with you again
I worked with Julie on numerous short stories and found that her story development sense was SO sharp. She is professional, easy to understand (unlike many other editors I have worked with) and encouraging. So much so that now I am thinking of writing a novel with Julie as my story editor! I cannot recommend her enough!
The thing about Julie is that she makes writing come alive, whether it's her own writing or someone else's. I have seen Julie in action with other writers, I have read her work, and have shared my own texts with her. She has always had the uncanny ability to capture the narrative, completely disappear inside it like an explorer in the jungle, and come back out on the other side with the deepest and most significant insight on how it needs to evolve in order to become its best version. She lets the text speak through her...she's the text whisperer!
Julie Gray is an absolute treasure and so much more than a story editor. She is insightful, creative, extremely experienced and an invaluable mentor. Writing my YA book series, Julie coached me in so many areas such as weaving together the various and complex dramatic plots and twists for maximum tension, emotional honesty and entertainment. I highly recommend her to all writers.
Julie provided invaluable guidance for my novel, both in terms of story development and constructive criticism. Her comments were always prescient, her suggestions useful, and her attitude supportive and nurturing. I am now working on a second novel with Julie and would encourage anyone considering her services to make use of her considerable talents and experience.
When it comes to book doctors, Julie Grey is a "specialist", but you don't need to wait for an appointment, or a prescription. She is simply the best. I was writing a book, which sorely needed a critical edit; yet, she gave me the confidence of a metaphysical cheerleader to see the project through to its completion. Julie Grey, you are a true wordsmith!
Julie helped take my feature screenplay to the next level. Her criticisms were clear and on the ball - both in details, and in overarching issues. She was strong both in narrative issues and character issues. Her points were constructive, and basically with her expert advice, I proceeded smoothy to the next draft.
Julie Gray is as insightful as she is articulate. From our first conversation it was clear that she could provide me with direction, feedback, structure, confidence and the support necessary to complete the novel I'd been struggling with for way too long. Julie is a pro!
Julie has helped me so much with short stories I am working on. Her attention to detail is just what I have been looking for. What really impressed me was her ability to hone in on the areas which really needed attention. After working with Julie, I think I can finally feel that some of my work is done and I can move on to other projects. I also really appreciated her notes, sometimes line by line, which made it much easier for me to make grammatical corrections or find a different word or image where needed. Do yourself a favor and feel assured that you will get a very thorough edit on whatever project you are working on.
Julie is a brilliant story teller and gifted book doctor. She knows what a great book should look like, and gives her whole self towards ensuring that you craft your best work. She has many years of experience in the center of the industry and has loads of insights into getting read and published. Julie gets my highest rating and recommendation.
