Theater and Theology and Theatre Company Jerusalem present master storyteller Gabriella Lev’s astonishing tale: Shards of Laughter.

Created and conceived by Gabriella Lev, with direction by Yael Valier, Shards of Laughter will play at Beit Mazia in Jerusalem, on July 8, 9, 15 and 16 at 8pm. Tickets cost 90 NIS (75 NIS for soldiers/national service/students).

The shows are followed by a discussion with Gabriella. On July 9 and July 16, the discussion will include Rav Gideon Sylvester who will talk with Gabriella about Destruction and Rebuilding.

In Shards, Gabriella, a master performer and storyteller, pieces together her family’s Holocaust history from the fragmented stories and mysterious references she heard as a child and explored as an adult. The result is at once a deeply personal portrait of her family’s struggle, and a microcosm of the European Jewish experience during the Shoah. Told with honesty, artistry, and lifesaving humor, Shards leaves its impression in the intellect and in the spirit.

Shards refuses to let destruction have the final word. It asks what remains, how we hold memory without being defined by loss, and how we can use humor to carry us.

That is why we are performing during the Three Weeks (the three saddest weeks in the Jewish year, commemorating the destruction of Jerusalem and its Temple and the expulsion of the Jews from their land). This is the season when Jewish history asks us to face destruction without turning away from the possibility of return.

Note that the performance includes recorded music, including in two memory scenes of happy times.

Gabriella Lev is founding artistic director of Theatre Company Jerusalem, one of Israel's most distinctive theatre companies. She is a recipient of the Kipod Hazahav Award for Lifetime Achievement, and the Jerusalem Award for Unique Contribution to Cultural Life. Gabi, raised in Australia, usually directs and performs in Hebrew. Shards provides a rare opportunity for English-speakers to experience her magic on stage.
