We are pleased to announce the next Movie Matinee at Beit Knesset Hanassi. On Tuesday, January 20, we will present the highly acclaimed, multi-award winning film MR. HOLLAND’S OPUS.
Glenn Holland has dreams. His life is music and he wants to be a composer. He dreams of composing a masterpiece. He has dreams for his son, too. He wants his son to follow in his footsteps—to love music, all genres of music. Glenn even names his son after John Coltrane, the incomparable jazz saxophonist, bandleader and composer.
But, of course, “Der mentsh trakht un got lakht.” (“Man plans and G-d laughs.”)
Glenn’s dreams are not realized. Needing to support his family, he becomes a high school music teacher. There is no time for music composing. And his son is unable to appreciate music.
But it is as a teacher of high school students that Glenn finds his true passion. He becomes the teacher every youth wishes they had. And his son gives Glenn a gift he could never have expected.
Richard Dreyfuss stars as Glenn Holland. His brilliant, poignant and highly believable performance earned him an Academy Award nomination.
This deeply moving film is about dreams deferred and love discovered. It is about human triumphs. The film itself is a triumph. It grabs you by your heart and never lets go. You will laugh, cry and cheer. This movie is a gift.
The movie is in English and has English subtitles. It is 2⅓hours in length.
The Movie Matinee is at 2:00. There will be a brief introduction of the film and a short talk and discussion after the screening.
There will be refreshments. No reservations are required.
Beit Knesset Hanassi is located at 24 Ussishkin Street. The admission is 20 shekels for members of the shul and 30 shekels for non-members.
