We are pleased to announce the next Movie Matinee at Beit Knesset Hanassi. On Tuesday, May 19, we will present the highly acclaimed film Mister Roberts.
A naval officer (Henry Fonda) is stuck on a cargo/supply ship far from the action of World War II. He wants to see combat but the ship’s captain (James Cagney) won’t grant him a transfer. The captain offers him a deal, a very costly deal that changes the officer’s life.
The movie was nominated for Best Picture of 1956. It is considered an enduring classic worth watching many years after its release.
This award-winning, brilliant comedy/drama has a superb cast. In fact, reviewers of the film say that Mister Roberts excels through its masterful blend of comedy and drama, happiness and sadness and anger and goodwill, anchored by outstanding performances from Fonda and Cagney and also by Jack Lemmon. Fonda reprises his role as the title character that he played in the long-running Broadway play. Lemmon won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in one of the first movie roles of his illustrious career. Indeed, the entire cast, including the great William Powell in the last of his almost 100 roles, elevates the material through its chemistry.
The film thoughtfully explores military life. But, as one reviewer wrote, the themes are universal. That is one reason why the film has received the popular, long-lasting acclaim that it has. Many individuals have had to work in settings where the boss was a tinpot dictator.
Mister Roberts has become an American classic.
The Movie Matinee is at 2:00. The film is two hours in length and has English subtitles.
There will be a brief introduction of the film and a short talk and discussion after the screening.
There will be refreshments. No reservations are required.
Beit Knesset Hanassi is located at 24 Ussishkin Street. The admission is 20 shekels for members of the shul and 30 shekels for non-members.
If you can please bring the exact change, we would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.
