We are pleased to announce the next Movie Matinee at Beit Knesset Hanassi. On Tuesday, February 17, we will present the highly acclaimed, multi-award-winning film THE POSTMAN (IL POSTINO).

Mario is a mailman in a village on a small Italian island. He delivers the mail on his bicycle. As it turns out, there is only one residence on his route. It is the home where the internationally-acclaimed, later Nobel Prize-winning poet Pablo Neruda has fled from his native, politically repressive Chile.

In the course of the daily transfer of mail, Neruda and the unsophisticated Mario develop a warm and abiding friendship. Mario falls for the village beauty, Beatrice. Think Sophia Loren. Think Gina Lollobrigida. Think Claudia Cardinale. Mario is beyond smitten. He seeks help from Neruda in winning Beatrice’s heart.

Neruda encourages Mario to develop a poetic sense. It is with that perception that Mario can attract the gorgeous Beatrice. Women love poetry, Neruda says. The daily stack of unsolicited “love letters” to Neruda from women around the world ratify Neruda’s counsel.

Neruda shares his poetry with Mario which Mario then woos Beatrice with. When Neruda questions Mario about this, Mario replies: “Poetry doesn’t belong to those who write it. It is for those who need to use it.”

This sweet, poignant film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture—a rare occurrence for a foreign language film—and four other Oscars. IT WON MORE THAN 30 INTERNATIONAL AWARDS.

Splendid acting and a subtle and gentle yet powerful nature with much humor make this a very special movie, deserving of all the praise. We believe you will be as moved by this film as we are.

The movie is in Italian and has English subtitles. It is 1¾ hours in length.

The Movie Matinee is at 2:00. There will be a brief introduction of the film and a short talk and discussion after the screening.

There will be refreshments. No reservations are required.

Beit Knesset Hanassi is located at 24 Ussishkin Street. The admission is 20 shekels for members of the shul and 30 shekels for non-members.

If you can please bring the exact change, we would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.
